Breaking Point

Without time to reinforce numbers, the Foreign Legion marched headlong towards the enemy lines. The Mujikans were withdrawing from the front to regroup for a major attack and the Jabalina were planning to use the Mujikans former defenses against them. Shun's company was ordered to take up positions in a border castle along the front lines.

There, Shun and his company set up defenses inside the castle including pitch outside the gate and two forward scorpions positioned on the battlements. After a day of preparing the castle for attack, the Legionnaires readied themselves for battle. The Mujikans launched more Fear Gas at the castle, but to no effect- thanks to the new Swamp Masks the soldiers used to remain immune to the arcane attack.

Later in the day, the Mujikans began their piecemeal assaults. The first was an attempt to scale the walls, but the Legionnaires' defenses held and only five Mujikans made it up the wall. The next was an attempt to batter the gate, but this too was thrown back by the Jabalina scorpion guns.

On the following day, the Mujikan artillery hammered the East wall, setting one of the towers aflame and breaking the gates of the citadel open. Shun rearranged his troops and prepared for the final Mujikan assault. The Mujiakn infantry threw themselves forward in great numbers. They were able to scale the wall this time, but Portuputos jumped into the midst of them and slew many. He then used the enemy ladders and entered the field in front of the walls.

Unbeknownst to Shun and his soldiers fighting on the walls, the Mujikans overran the trenches north and south of the castle and were turning towards their position. Thirty Mujikans scaled the undefended north and south walls each and joined the battle- flanking the Legionnaires. In the east field, Lore swooped down to fight beside Portuputos who was quickly overrun by Mujikan reinforcements. Shun ordered the pitch lit to prevent the gate from being captured and drew his weapon to hold the staircase of the castle.

When the Mujikans overran the walls, Shun personally commanded a squadron whose only surviving soldiers were manning a scorpion gun. Lore's platoon- surrounding their medic- held the plaza against non-stop attacks from three sides. Portuputos and Lore fought off countless enemies, but at the cost of serious injuries. Shi'eh held her platoon together on the southeast corner of the wall, attempting to hold the line against the enemy.

Just when the Mujikans overran the castle and all hope of victory was gone, a mysterious masked warrior appeared behind the enemy center. She slew dozens of Mujikans with a single sweep of her axe. After clearing the enemy center, the warrior woman jumped a hundred feet to enter the battle on the north wall. After clearing it, she jumped another hundred feet to clear the southeast corner- fighting beside Shi'eh. With only a few Mujikans left, the warrior woman withdrew. Shun killed the last few enemies with his scorpion crew and the battle was over.

Across the front, less than five hundred of the original twelve thousand Legionnaires remained. With such heavy casualties sustained, the Legion was being pulled from the front for six months to train more soldiers and prepare for the rest of the war.
